HOWARD CARTER (1874-1939)

Howard Carter was an archaeologist and Egyptologist famous for discovering the tomb of Tutankhamun, also known as King Tut. Like his ancestor Katherine Cahill, Carter was fascinated by the ancient Egyptians, but he had a secret reason for exploring ancient tombs. He believed that Katherine had hidden a Clue somewhere in Egypt, and that she had left hints inside four different statues of the goddess Sakhet.

Carter was so desperate to find the statues that he risked the legendary "curse of the pharaohs," the punishment for disturbing the tomb of an Egyptian king. Although most of the members of the expedition were skeptical of the myth, a number of people on Carter's team died shortly after the tomb was opened. Carter didn't believe the curse, yet he recorded a number of strange events. A messenger sent to Carter's house found a cobra—the symbol of the Egyptian monarchy—resting in a birdcage. And once Carter started excavating the tomb, he began seeing jackals—the symbol of the guardian of the dead. Carter lived for another sixteen years, but he never found the last Sakhet statue; it was as if he was cursed to search forever.
